Israel preparing for another Gaza war

Wed Dec 28, 2011 5:6PM GMT

Israeli army chief-of-staff Benny Gantz

Israel has threatened to launch another all-out war on the Gaza Strip, saying attacking the Palestinian territory is not a matter of choice, but a war of necessity for Tel Aviv.

Marking the third anniversary of Israel's deadly attack on Gaza, the chief of staff of the Israeli military, Lt. General Benny Gantz, said on Tuesday that Tel Aviv will ''sooner or later'' need to launch a large-scale operation against Hamas, the democratically-elected ruler of Gaza because Tel Aviv is losing its grip on the coastal strip.

Gantz said Operation Cast Lead, which Israel launched against Gaza on December 27, 2008 and lasted for three week, had a deterrent effect on Israeli security, in which cracks were starting to show over time, forcing Israel to launch another war.

Gantz also said that Tel Aviv is looking for the right time to launch a military offensive against the Gaza Strip and that the new war ''must be initiated by Israel and must be swift and painful".

The Israeli regime waged a 22-day Christmas war on the densely populated coastal sliver in 2008 left more than 1,400 Palestinians dead including at least 300 children.

The offensive also destroyed 4,000 houses and devastated a large portion of infrastructures in the blockaded strip. Israeli military forces also targeted UN-run schools and centers.

More than 50,000 people were also displaced as a result of the three-week war.

Tel Aviv also used internationally-banned weapons, including white phosphorus bombs, against the Gazans during the three-week war.

Infant dies in Gaza Strip due to fuel shortage

An infant dies in Gaza City in the north of the Gaza Strip after the generator powering his respirator ceased operation due to the fuel shortage besetting the Tel Aviv-blockaded coastal sliver.

Gaza medical spokesman, Adham Abu Salmiya, said the seven-month-old died on Friday evening, Al-Aghsa TV, the official television channel run by the Palestinian resistance movement of Hamas, reported on Saturday.

The respirator was used to remove the fluids formed by a congenital lymphatic disorder from the baby’s respiratory system.

According to a statement issued by Gaza Power Authority, the besieged enclave’s sole power plant had shut down again on Sunday morning after a few days of sporadic operation.

Hamas Health Minister Bassem Naim also announced on Sunday that the fuel shortage was placing lives in jeopardy.

"Fifty percent of our ambulances and vehicles are immobilized…We are under constant strain from power cuts," he said in a statement.

In mid-February, Egypt blocked the flow of diesel through the tunnels lying beneath its border with Gaza, which are used to transfer supplies into the impoverished enclave amid a crippling siege imposed on the territory by Israel.

The stoppage forced Gaza's sole electricity power plant out of work, causing the enclave to start experiencing blackouts of up to 18 hours a day.

Gaza has been blockaded by Tel Aviv since 2007, causing a decline in the standard of living, unprecedented levels of unemployment, and unrelenting poverty.

The full-scale land, aerial, and naval siege has turned the enclave into the world's largest open-air prison.

Israel begins new air and ground assaults on Gaza

Thu Mar 29, 2012 9:37PM GMT

Israel has launched an air and ground assault on the southern Gaza Strip, as it continues to step up its attacks on the besieged Palestinian territory, Press TV reports.

A Press TV correspondent said on Thursday that Israeli troops entered the eastern part of the town of Rafah with tanks and bulldozers. Israeli helicopters also opened fire on the same area.

Over the past few months, Tel Aviv has increased its attacks on the besieged coastal strip, killing tens of Palestinian people and injuring many more.

The Israeli military frequently attacks the Gaza Strip, saying the actions are being conducted for defensive purposes. However, disproportionate force is always used, in violation of international law, and civilians are often killed or injured.

Gaza has been blockaded since 2007, a situation which has caused a decline in the standards of living, and has triggered unprecedented levels of unemployment and unrelenting poverty.

'Land Day' clashes: Youngster killed, over 200 injured – reports

A Gaza youth has been killed while over 200 people have been wounded throughout the West Bank. The violence comes as clashes between Israeli security forces and Palestinians protesters marking Land Day rage on.
Gaza ministry of health has confirmed that a 20-year-old Palestinian was killed at the Erez Crossing in the northern end of the Gaza Strip. His body has been taken to Al Shifa hospital, RT’s Paula Slier reports from the scene.
Over 200 people have been injured so far at Qalandia checkpoint in the West Bank alone, including 85 with rubber bullets, the Red Crescent says. Palestinian legislator Mustafa Barghouti was rushed to hospital after being hit in the head by a tear gas canister in Qalandia. Ambulances are racing to and from the scene, as Palestinian youngsters continue throwing stones at Israeli soldiers and police.
The standoff between the Israeli army and Palestinians continues at various checkpoints, with occasional bursts of tear gas being fired at protesters. To disperse the crowds, Israeli forces are also using water cannons and rubber bullets.
Some reports suggest that Israelis used live ammunition. At least nine people have been wounded, one seriously, when police opened fire on protesters, medics in the Gaza Strip say.
Israeli security forces are further deploying other kinds of non-lethal weaponry, including “skunk devices” that spray a foul-smelling fluid, and machines that emit a high frequency sound.
Israel has ramped up security ahead of the Friday protests, deploying some 1,000 additional law enforcement personnel to patrol Jerusalem and its neighboring areas. Police have arrested between 14 and 34 protesters in Jerusalem, according to different reports.
Meanwhile, some 20,000 protesters have reportedly gathered along the Israeli-Jordanian border. Crowds are also gathering along the Israeli- Lebanese border, as the Lebanese army responded by beefing up its security presence. There have been no reports of injuries or clashes along the border so far.

Tel Aviv regime releases Palestinian prisoner Hana Shalabi

Mon Apr 2, 2012 5:50AM GMT

The Tel Aviv regime has “conditionally” released a female Palestinian prisoner, on hunger strike to protest her arbitrary arrest without charge, weeks after she was re-arrested at her West Bank home on February 16 following an earlier release.

Hana Shalabi was set free but “forcibly” deported to the Gaza Strip by the Israeli regime on Sunday.

The female Palestinian prisoner had been on a hunger strike since February 16, when she was re-arrested without charge after being released earlier as part of a prisoner swap deal between the Islamic Hamas movement and the Israeli regime.

According to the Palestinian WAFA news agency, Shalabi had “agreed” to end her hunger strike on March 29 in return for “expulsion to the Gaza Strip for three years.” However, the non-governmental Palestinian prisoner support and human rights association, Addameer, censured the “forcible transfer and conditioned release” of Shalabi in a statement issued on Sunday.

“Forcible transfer and conditioned release is not an alternative to Israel ending its practice of administrative detention. It is imperative to demand a permanent resolution to Israel's practice of arbitrary detention, in compliance with international humanitarian law,” Addameer stated.

Shalabi was rushed to the Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, where she underwent treatment for dehydration and weight loss.

The female Palestinian detainee, who is from the city of Jenin in the northern occupied West Bank, had been under “administrative detention,” according to her lawyers.

The administrative detention, often implemented by the Israeli regime against the Palestinian population, is a sort of imprisonment without trial or charge, allowing regime forces to make arrests without formal charges for up to six months. However, the detention order can be renewed for indefinite periods of time.

Shalabi was “beaten, abused, blindfolded and interrogated, and placed in solitary confinement” for the first week of her detention, her lawyers said.

Hana Shalabi is one of the detainees re-arrested by Israeli forces over the past few weeks. The detainees were freed from Israeli jails in October and December of last year under a deal mediated by Egypt to free 1,027 Palestinian inmates in exchange for Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit.

Three Gaza children burnt to death, one man killed by Israeli forces

Sun Apr 1, 2012 10:30PM GMT

Four people, including three children, have been killed in the besieged territory of the Gaza Strip amid Israeli attacks and energy crisis in the coastal area.

Three Palestinian children were burnt to death in a fire started by a candle being used due to lack of electricity in the Gaza Strip, which has been under crippling Israeli blockade since June 2007.

"A fire broke out in the children's room," said Adham Abu Selmiya, emergency services spokesman for Gaza, on Sunday.

"Apparently the fire was caused by a candle which was being used after the electricity was cut," he added.

The children were of two, five and six years of age.

Selmiya stated that the incident took place in the central town of Deir Balah.

He also said that another child, aged six months, was badly burnt and was rushed to hospital.

Also on Sunday, Israeli troops killed a Palestinian man near the Gaza security fence.

Over the past few months, Tel Aviv has increased its attacks on the besieged coastal strip, killing tens of Palestinian people and injuring many more.

The Israeli military frequently attacks the Gaza Strip, saying the actions are being conducted for defensive purposes. However, disproportionate force is always used in violation of international law, and civilians are often killed or injured.

Fuel shortage threatens livelihood of fishermen in Gaza Strip

Mon Apr 2, 2012 4:31AM GMT

The deputy minister of agriculture in the Gaza Strip says the living conditions of fishermen in the Palestinian territory will further deteriorate unless they receive the fuel required for their boats, Press TV reports.

Ibrahim al-Qedra told Press TV on Sunday the fuel crisis in Gaza has had a “very negative effect” on the fishermen all over the coastal enclave.

“There are nearly 4,000 fishermen in Gaza whose income supports about 40,000 people. The fishing industry has been paralyzed due to the lack of fuel since the middle of March.”

Qedra added that the living conditions of the fishermen will “only deteriorate” unless they get fuel supplies.

A fisherman in Gaza told Press TV that they have not been able to catch “a single fish over the past week, because our boats require fuel to operate.”

Egypt’s refusal to allow fuel supplies into the Gaza Strip has paralyzed the fishing industry in the Palestinian territory over the past weeks, our correspondent reports.

“Lack of fuel is hurting us and our families… I have not made any money in recent days. We own fishing boats and we cannot fish. I just hope that the situation will not stay that way for long, because a lot of people depend on us for their livelihoods,” said another fisherman in the Israeli occupied territory.

Lack of fuel is not the only problem the people of Gaza have to deal with on a continuous basis. The Israeli regime persistently denies about 1.5 million people in the besieged Palestinian territory their basic rights, including the freedom of movement and the right to decent living, work, health and education.

Israeli soldiers open fire on Gaza, injure Palestinian

Another Palestinian man has been injured after Israeli soldiers stationed near the Gaza border opened fire in the direction of the besieged coastal strip, Press TV reports.

Reports say Israeli troops, backed by tanks and military bulldozers, fired on a Palestinian worker east of the Gaza Strip on Monday.

According to Palestinian sources, Israeli forces also pounded areas near Khan Yunis and Rafah.

No further details were provided.

Palestinian workers collecting stones and other construction materials along the buffer zone in north and eastern Gaza are frequently targeted by Israeli soldiers.

Due to a crippling Israeli blockade, Gazans have no other choice but to obtain the required material for construction work from other buildings that have been destroyed in Israeli attacks.

Defense for Children International documented 14 cases between March and October 2010 of Palestinian youths under the age of 18 who were shot by Israeli forces while collecting gravel in the border zone.

The youngest of these children was 13 and the oldest 17.

Israeli forces shoot, injure girl in Gaza

Wed, 18 Apr 2012 08:33:58 GMT

A young Palestinian girl has been shot and injured by Israeli soldiers in the impoverished southern Gaza Strip. The incident took place in the city of Khan Yunis on Wednesday. No further details have so far been reported on the occurrence.

Meanwhile, Israeli forces opened fire on a Palestinian farmer in Khan Yunis on Tuesday. He was shot in the thigh. Gaza has been blockaded by the Israeli regime since 2007, a situation that has caused a decline in the standards of living and has triggered unprecedented levels of unemployment
and unrelenting poverty.

The oppressive regime also denies the 1.5 million Gazans their basic rights, including the freedom of movement and the right to decent living, work, health and education.

Moreover, Defense for Children International documented 14 cases between March and October 2010 of Palestinian youths under the age of 18 who were shot by Israeli forces while collecting gravel in the border zone.

Palestinian teenager injured in clash with Israeli soldiers

Sun May 20, 2012 3:32PM GMT

A Palestinian teenager has been seriously injured in a clash with Israeli soldiers in north of the city of al-Khalil in the occupied West Bank.

An Israeli military official claimed the clash broke out on Sunday when the 18-year-old Palestinian boy “objected to routine security checks and confronted the soldiers.”

Israeli medical sources, on the other hand, claim that the teenager is in a “stable condition.”

The Sunday clash in the West Bank took place a few days after seven Palestinians were injured in an attack carried out by an Israeli tank on the Gaza Strip.

Palestinian medical sources said the tank shelling targeted an area near the Karni crossing northeast of the occupied territory.

Israeli troops also shot dead 20-year-old Mahmud Zakut in the city of Beit Hanoun in northern Gaza Strip on March 30, the same day when thousands of pro-Palestinians gathered in the occupied territory to mark the Palestinian Land Day.

Hamas warns against Israeli settlers’ plan to attack Al-Aqsa Mosque

Image

Caption: - This file photo shows the Al-Aqsa Mosque in East al-Quds (Jerusalem).

The Palestinian resistance movement of Hamas has warned against a decision by Israeli settlers to attack the Al-Aqsa Mosque in East al-Quds (Jerusalem).

Hamas gave the warning in a statement after Israeli settlers announced a plan to attack the Al-Aqsa Mosque on Sunday, Palestinian media reported.

The resistance group said it will defend the mosque, calling on Palestinians to gather in the mosque to protect it.

Hamas also urged the Arab League, the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation, and the Arab nations to help Palestinians in their resistance against Israel.

Israeli settlers, who are mostly armed, regularly attack Palestinian villages and farms and set fire to their mosques, olive groves and other Palestinian properties in the occupied Palestinian territories.

Palestinians and human rights groups have accused Israeli authorities of turning a blind eye to the violence by the settlers against Palestinians and say the assailants are rarely caught or prosecuted.

Palestinian dies from Israeli strike wounds

Mon Jun 4, 2012 2:10AM GMT

A Palestinian, who was injured in an Israeli airstrike on the Tel Aviv-blockaded Gaza Strip on Friday, has died of the wounds he had suffered during the attack, Press TV reports.

The fatality occurred on Monday. Two other Palestinians had also been killed during two separate Israeli attacks on Friday.

In the early hours of Monday, an Israel warplane fired two missiles on the east and south of the Gaza City in the north of the coastal sliver, injuring at least one Palestinian.

One of the airstrikes targeted a cheese-producing factory and the other hit an open agricultural field.

On Sunday, Israeli aerial attacks sent seven Palestinians, mostly children, to the hospital.

The Israeli military frequently strikes the Gaza Strip, saying the acts of aggression are conducted for defensive purposes. However, disproportionate force is always used in violation of international law, and civilians are often killed or injured.

Gaza has been blockaded since 2007, which is a situation that has caused a decline in the standard of living, unprecedented levels of unemployment, and unrelenting poverty.

Israeli aircraft strike 2 targets in Gaza Strip

Israeli aircraft have struck two targets in the besieged Gaza Strip, injuring at least two Palestinian men.

Medical sources say one of the victims was seriously injured in the strike on an area in the north of the Gaza Strip.

A poultry farm in Rafah in the south of the enclave was also attacked.

Gaza footballer who dared to dream languishes in Israel prison

http://dawn.com/2012/06/12/gaza-footballer-who-dared-to-dream-languishes-in-israel-prison/

RAFAH: In 2009, Mahmud Sarsak set out from Gaza to sign on with a West Bank football team, but what he thought was the start of a dream career quickly spiralled into a nightmare.

Three years later, the young athlete is lying in a bed in an Israeli prison clinic after spending more than 80 days without eating in protest at his being held without charge.

With his case drawing more and more attention, the Israel Prison Authority on Monday told AFP that Sarsak had ended his strike.

But the Ramallah-based Palestinian Prisoners’ Club denied the claim, as did his family, although his lawyer Mohammed Jabarin admitted Sarsak was “drinking milk” in a move which he said did not amount to breaking the strike.

Sarsak, 25, was born in Gaza and dreamed of becoming a professional footballer. As a teenager, he played several times for the Palestinian national team in Europe and the Middle East, attracting favourable attention from coaches.

So when he set out for the West Bank on July 22, 2009, he felt he had a promising career ahead of him.

But he never even got there.

As he tried to pass the Erez crossing into Israel, Sarsak was arrested and has been held ever since under Israel’s so-called unlawful ‘combatants law,’ which allows suspects to be held without charge under a procedure similar to administrative detention.

Israeli officials have called Sarsak an “Islamic Jihad terrorist who planned attacks and bombings,” but have not made public any charges or evidence against him.

“They want to kill my Mahmud,” says his mother Umm al-Abed, sitting outside a solidarity tent by International Committee of the Red Cross headquarters in Gaza City. “Why isn’t the world doing anything?”

Sarsak began his hunger strike on March 23 as a wave of similar protests swept through the population of Palestinians being held in Israeli jails.

Most of the prisoners sought improved conditions, including visits from relatives living in Gaza, greater access to lawyers and an end to solitary confinement.

But many, including Sarsak, also sought an end to Israel’s use of administrative detention, a practice under which military courts can order individuals held without charge for six-month periods.

Each detention order is renewable indefinitely, and based on secret evidence which the individual and even his lawyer are often unable to see.

Sarsak’s detention has been renewed multiple times since he was first arrested.

“We call on all the Arab and European clubs to save a footballer’s life. He could die at any minute,” his brother Imad told AFP.

Imad Sarsak says the family has no idea why Israel is holding Mahmud, who was in his third year of a computer programming degree when he was arrested.

“They want to kill his dream as a footballer who just started his professional career,” he said. “We don’t know why they are still holding him without charge. He only cares about football and has nothing to do with politics.”

In the southern city of Rafah, a large picture of Sarsak hangs in the Khadamat club, where he once played.

Jamal Abu Amira, head of Khadamat’s sports committee, said he was “shocked” at Israel’s apparent indifference to respond to pressure from activists over Sarsak’s plight.

“We call on all football clubs in the world to show solidarity with Mahmud,” he told AFP. “This up-and-coming player has the right to freedom because there is no reason for holding him and no charges against him.”

Although the long-term hunger strike by Sarsak and six others was later joined by more than 1,500 others, the mass fast drew to a close on May 14 after the prisoners reached an agreement with Israel to improve their conditions.

The deal did not include an end to administrative detention, but an understanding that prisoners would be released when their current stint of detention expired – unless there was new evidence against them.

Despite a brief break on May 14, Sarsak quickly resumed his fast, insisting he will not stop until he receives a written guarantee that he will be released in July, a lawyer for the Palestinian prisoners ministry says.

“Mahmud refuses to stop his hunger strike in exchange for oral promises to release him on July 12, he wants written promises,” Fadi Obeidat said in a statement.

Since late May, Sarsak has been receiving vitamins and sugar to keep him alive, but fears about his health have grown.

None of his family have been able to visit him, and his 70-year-old father Kamal, who just suffered a heart attack, worries he may never see his son again.

“I want to see my son alive before I die,” he says.

Israeli tanks, bulldozers attack Deir al-Balah in central Gaza Strip

Sun, 17 Jun 2012 14:34:30 GMT

Israeli tanks and bulldozers have carried out an incursion into the city of Deir al-Balah in the central Gaza Strip, injuring a Palestinian during the attack.

Israeli bulldozers also destroyed on Sunday agricultural land in Deir al-Balah, located about 14 kilometers (8.5 miles) south of Gaza City.

The latest Israeli attack on Gaza was carried out on the same day when an illegal Israeli settler shot dead two Palestinians in the city of al-Khalil in the southern occupied West Bank.

Meanwhile, acting Palestinian Authority chief Mahmoud Abbas condemned the killing of the two Palestinians on Sunday.

Israel conducts attacks against the Gaza Strip on an almost regular basis.

Three Palestinians were injured in an Israeli airstrike on southern Gaza on June 1.

On March 30, Israeli troops shot dead a 20-year-old Palestinian in the city of Beit Hanoun in northern Gaza Strip on a day when thousands of pro-Palestinians had gathered in the occupied territory to mark the Palestinian Land Day.

In addition to airstrikes and ground attacks, the Tel Aviv regime also denies about 1.7 million people in Gaza their basic rights, including the freedom of movement and the right to decent living, work, health and education.

Israeli tanks and bulldozers destroyed Palestinian land in Gaza a few days after US President Barack Obama awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Israeli President Shimon Peres, the man who has overseen the killing of Palestinian women and children by Israeli forces in the occupied territories for decades.

Obama awarded the 88-year-old criminal the highest civilian honor in the United States during a dinner ceremony in the White House on June 13.

The US president said the “bonds” between the United States and Israel are “unbreakable” and “non-negotiable.”

Israeli warplanes injure 5 Palestinians in Gaza City

Mon Jun 18, 2012 1:19AM GMT

Israeli warplanes have struck the south of the Gaza City in the besieged Gaza Strip, wounding five Palestinians, medics say.

Israeli warplanes pounded the coastal enclave in the night between June 17 and 18, AFP reported.

According to medics women and children are among the wounded.

One of the strikes targeted a workshop in the town of Rafah near the Egyptian border, and the other hit an area south of Gaza City.

The Israeli military frequently bombs the Gaza Strip, saying the actions are being conducted for defensive purposes. However, disproportionate force is always used, in violation of international law, and civilians are often killed or injured.

Human rights organizations have called for an end to the attacks, but to no avail.

Gaza has been blockaded since 2007, which is a situation that has caused a decline in the standard of living, unprecedented levels of unemployment, and unrelenting poverty.

Israeli settlers torch mosque in WB

Tue, 19 Jun 2012 05:52:55 GMT

Suspected extremist Israeli settlers have set fire to a mosque and sprayed graffiti on its
walls in the occupied West Bank.

A resident of the West Bank village of Jaba said that “somebody entered the mosque,
broke the window and threw a match causing a fire” during the early hours of Tuesday
before dawn.

The assailants wrote in Hebrew, “The war has begun,” and “Pay the price,” the man
said.

New Israeli airstrike kills 2 Gazans

LAST UPDATE

Tue, 19 Jun 2012 12:13:14 GMT

Two Palestinian teenagers have been killed in a fresh Israeli airstrike on the Gaza Strip, a day after four other Palestinians were killed in similar attacks.

A Palestinian medical source said the attack targeted an area in the city of Deir al-Balah in central Gaza shortly after midnight on Tuesday.

“Two citizens were killed in an Israeli airstrike,” said the source, whose name was not mentioned in the report.

“The bodies were only recovered this morning when an ambulance could get to the
scene.”

The 17-year-old victims were identified as Mohammed Bassem Abu Mealiq and Yusef al-
Talbani.

Earlier reports said two Palestinians were injured in the strike, but it was not clear if the two were the same people, who died later, or additional casualties.

The Tuesday airstrike was conducted a day after four Palestinians were killed and three
others wounded in two similar attacks on an area near the northern city of Beit Hanoun
in Gaza.

Also in Deir al-Balah, Israeli tanks and bulldozers carried out an incursion into the city on June 17, injuring a Palestinian during the attack.

"In addition to the attacks in Gaza, an illegal Israeli settler shot dead two Palestinians in the city of al-Khalil in the southern occupied West Bank on June 17." The Israeli regime conducts attacks against the Gaza Strip on an almost regular basis.

Reports of Israeli aggression against the Palestinian territories come a few days after the United States awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Israeli President Shimon Peres, the man who has overseen the killing of Palestinian women and children by Israeli forces in Palestine for decades.

US President Barack Obama awarded the 88-year-old criminal the highest civilian honor in the United States during a dinner ceremony in the White House on June 13.
