Could you give a little summary of what this book is about please?

I'd be grateful. :)

Sure. :) It's pretty short though. Just 12 pages. I find that it's a good paper for one who wants to know the basics regarding Waqf.

1) Short intro: Definition & History of waqf
2) How it began & the different kinds of waqf: Religious, Philanthropic, Posterity/Family waqf
3) Matters of ownership
4) Characteristics: Perpetuity; Permanence of stipulations of waqf founder.
5) Legal conditions of waqf.
6) Management of waqf: how it was done back then (the example touched on Egypt in the 18th Century) and how Muslim communities in non-Muslim countries managed theirs.
7) Sociopolitical role of waqf: how waqf and its objectives play an important role in the sociopolitical life of Muslim societies & communities.
8) Waqf in the 20th Century.

I have a few more hard copies which are more concise and longer regarding waqf but I can't seem to find soft copies in my netbook. Hope the summary sufficed. :)

I think my question should be- what is 'Waqf'? I have no clue what that word means haha.

lol! Right, that should've been your question. :)

Waqf is "the permanent dedication by a Muslim of any property for any purpose recognized by the Muslim law as religious, pious or charitable." For example, when you donate your land for the purpose of having a mosque built there or can be as small as when you donate slippers to your local mosque for the benefit of the Muslim ummah. This is one of the best form of charities (well, all types of charity is basically good really) since for as long as the thing you have donated are being used, it'll count as your good deeds even after you've left this world. It's perpetual.

It is sad many muslims nowdays have become totally alien to the concept of Waqf and have bought into the modern western socialist model of state run health, education and everything else.

True. I feel that it is somehow underrated in the field of Islamic Economics as well. The usage and benefits are so vast and much more flexible for conducting social programmes.

Here's another good lecture explaining the Waqf and Islamic model of sustainable development:
